Overview:
From the beginning, Brian knew he had a simple task: to convince the examiners that his work had merit, that his data collection and analysis was sound, and that his recommendations were based on strong evidence. In practice, of course, he faced challenges and worked hard to convey his thinking. Few people have the gift of assimilating it all with ease or polish. Most students need guidance, editing, and critique, and many struggles during their first attempts to build and sustain a coherent academic argument. The purpose of this book is to help you produce a thesis that passes an exam.
From the beginning, good students tend to be independent, confident, and have a habit of thinking like an investigator. Some students have these skills early on, but most have to learn them, and they do so by working with their supervisors and other students. In this book, I provide examples of what successful students have done as they progressed in their work. I also point out some of the mistakes that are possible if the task of writing a thesis is not approached in the right way. My examples are based on students, like Brian, with whom I have worked for several years.
What Is a Thesis?
Simply defined, a thesis is a long argument. To pass, a thesis must demonstrate logical, structured, and defensible reasoning based on credible and verifiable evidence presented in such a way that it makes an original contribution to knowledge, as judged by experts in the field. Among the many types of scholarly productions, these are a rarity: each one is different, and there are no standard or generic constructions. Most thesis supervisors have written only once, and despite their efforts to produce it, the only people who read a given thesis carefully are project supervisors, examiners, and a fairly select audience of scholarly scholars.
Criteria for Examination:
When universities submit a thesis for examination, they include suggested guidelines for examiners. I recommend that you obtain a copy of these guidelines from your own university (they are almost certainly available online) and read them carefully. Make an effort to understand the presentation and examination process as well.
