It is, indeed, a collection of their combined and personal experiences in a wide array of foot and ankle procedures. The desired audience is practising surgeons as well as residents and colleagues, primarily in the fields of orthopaedics and podiatry. Given the book’s foundation and presentation, it serves these purposes. Authors are well known and respected in their field. Of the more than 30 partners, about half are residents of various levels of orthopaedic surgery training and their related skills are unknown.
The book is divided into 30 chapters covering pre-existing foot conditions, flat feet and cavus foot disorders, ankle arthritis, tendon disorders, and foot and ankle trauma. Each chapter leads directly to the practice of performing the procedure. Most of the signs are not under discussion.
Each procedure begins with a list of the device that runs the bullet, the positioning, and a description of the procedure. Surgical points and pearls are highlighted where relevant. Each chapter is well illustrated with the best use of color plates, line drawings and diagnostic imaging where relevant.
This book is of the best quality and will be most useful for those whose main focus is foot and ankle surgery as well as for those who are experiencing foot and ankle pathology which is a common musculoskeletal practice. Are part of Although there are many references that this book does not compete with, its closest competitor will be foot and ankle surgery: Tricks of the Trade, Rykin (Theme, 2018). It’s a little different in shape, but it offers individual perspectives with hints and beads. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person.

This project would not have been possible without the daily experiences and interactions I had as a fellow at Hospital for Special Surgery. When I interviewed for the HSS foot and ankle fellowship, I immediately knew that I wanted to emulate the thought processes and technical skills of the faculty, many of whom are responsible for the treatment algorithms and surgical techniques used to treat the complex pathology we regularly see as orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons. My fellows, Stuart Saunders and Rachel Shakked, and I appreciated this unique opportunity and began taking notes immediately following cases, with technical pearls and diagrams recorded. We very quickly had an invaluable database of “tips and tricks” that have subsequently been passed on and used by each year of HSS fellows. I too have reviewed these notes countless times (and continue to do so as an attending surgeon). This experience brings back fond memories and reminds me of my roots and the invaluable experiences I had. I hope this text can similarly provide young foot and ankle surgeons with these useful techniques and the framework for a successful career.
