Focusing on disease content you need to know in a clear and accessible format, Porth’s Essentials of Pathophysiology offers concise yet comprehensive coverage of how the body works to help you establish the scientific foundation essential to your nursing career success.
The accessible presentation encourages understanding from basics to advanced and defines key terms as you go. The “fragmented” content, including the learning objectives, key point boxes and summary concept sections, highlights critical points for reflection. Full-color illustrations clarify the clinical manifestations of diseases and pathological processes. Review exercises at the end of each chapter assess your retention and identify areas for further study. The references provide quick and efficient access to standard laboratory values in conventional and SI units, as well as a comprehensive glossary. Narrated animations referenced by icons in the text and available online enhance your understanding of the most challenging and clinically relevant concepts.

More About:
The term pathophysiology, which is the focus of this book, may be defined as the physiology of altered health. The term combines the words pathology and physiology. Pathology (from the Greek pathos, meaning “disease”) deals with the study of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs of the body that cause or are caused by disease. Physiology deals with the functions of the human body. Thus, pathophysiology deals not only with the cellular and organ changes that occur with disease but also with the effects that these changes have on total body function (Fig. 1-1).
Examples of atrophy of the brain (Fig. 1-1A) and hypertrophy of the myocardium (Fig. 1-1B) illustrate pathophysiologic changes from a cerebrovascular accident to long-standing unmanaged hypertension and how this impacts the myocardium. Pathophysiology also focuses on the mechanisms of the underlying disease and provides information to assist with planning preventive as well as therapeutic health care measures and practices such as following a healthy diet, exercising, and being compliant with prescribed medications. This chapter is intended to orient the reader to the concepts of health and disease, various terms that are used throughout the book, the sources of data and what they mean, and the broader aspects of pathophysiology in terms of the health and well-being of populations.

This cross-section of the heart illustrates left ventricular hypertrophy because of long-standing hypertension. (From Strayer D. S., Rubin R. (2015).
