Surgical and Anaesthetic Instruments for OSCEs: A Practical Study Guide is intended for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees of medical disciplines interested in learning the basic healthcare equipment that they may come across in the workplace. There are many instrument books in the market that either go into too much detail or do not explain the basics of these instruments in a concise manner. There are currently no publications that combine basic anesthetic and surgical instruments in a single text. I, therefore, hope that the presentation of this book will fill this gap and stimulate interest and motivation in learning this subject matter.
I have developed the book in a question and answer format mimicking what it is like in an exam. I believe this will make one’s learning more structured and focussed without going into minute detail. It is obviously impossible to encompass the entire syllabus of anesthetic and surgical instruments in one textbook; this guide by no means pretends in any way that it serves this purpose. Rather, I want to cover the basic instruments that we use and see daily, explain them in a concise manner and help readers enjoy the process of learning something that will hopefully benefit their day-to-day job.

For those interested in learning more about the subject matter, I have included references for further reading. These are by no means comprehensive but serve to guide the reader’s direction into further learning in a more detailed manner.
I believe that images and illustrations aid our learning tremendously, especially when it comes to anaesthetic and surgical instruments. Many students may have seen these instruments from afar but have never had the opportunity to examine them closely. The inclusion of illustrative images is therefore one of the strongest merits of this book. Much of the work would not have been possible without the contribution of the manufacturers and suppliers. Their generous contribution to the images has made illustrations of these instruments possible.
Another merit of this book is the accompanying explanations. I set out to explain the rationale,
indications, contraindications and complications of the instruments, as opposed to merely listing
them with names and intended functions. I believe this will aid readers in learning the instruments
in a more well-rounded manner whilst covering “why-we-do-certain-things” in medicine. This
approach, in my opinion, is paramount in learning medicine which requires flexible thinking
rather than simply following protocols. It also ensures that readers will learn around the topic
rather than purely memorise instrumental indications. As such, I hope this book will serve to
motivate you in your training career in a different way.
Lastly and most importantly, I hope you will enjoy the book.
